Space

Think of the one thing you cannot measure; it surrounds you. Space. Space is a three dimensional endless vaccum in which objects and events have relative position and direction. It contains a low density of particles such as plasma of hydrogen, helium and more. We, as humans, can only see up to a distance of 13.7 billion light years. No one can hear you in space. That is because there is no ‘air’ in space. Sound waves cannot travel. This means you cannot survive in space unless you have the appropriate gear and oxygenated chambers.

In space there are millions of particles of matter ranging from dust all the way to giant black holes. I grew intensely intrigued with the idea of black holes and I was wondering why they were so dangerous. A black hole is a dead star in space where the gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. The gravity is strong because the matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. Since no light can get out, it is impossible for anyone to see it.

No one has lived to tell the tale of what it is like inside a black hole but scientists believe you will just get stretched and stretched until it forms a long piece of sphagetti because the gravity pulling your feet is much stronger than on your head. This process is called ‘Sphagettification’. Some black holes can be tiny but they have the mass of a mountain. A type of black hole is ‘stellar’ and it is 20 times bigger than the mass of the sun. The largest black holes are called the ‘supermassive’. Scientists discovered that every galaxy must have a supermassive black hole in the centre -- including ours. The black hole inside our Milky Way is called Sagittarius A.

Space is a concept truly beyond our present knowledge and will always be a mystery to mankind. As said in interstellar, “We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the sky, now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.

  1. Excellent post. The description of Black Hole is very clear.
