War

All countries have one thing in common. They hate war. War is a term used when there is armed conflict between two or more countries. It is often inevitable. The word war originates from the 11th century Old English words ‘werre’ and ‘wyrre’, which meant mixture and confusion.

In all ages war has always been a crucial topic of analysis. There are many types of war: Philosophical, political, economic, legal, psychologic, etc. Different weapons and military strategies evolved as time progressed and with experience, better and more destructive machinery came out. Among the most notorious wars found in history books are the World War 1 and World War 2. A short summary of World War 1 was when the ArchDuke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Hungary got assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia by a Serbian Nationalist. This happened in July 28th, 1914. There was already tension throughout the world and this was the tipping point. Austria and Hungary declared war on Serbia and partnered up with Italy and Germany to form the Triple Alliance. In the opposing side was France, Britain and Russia, forming the Triple Entente. The War ended in November 11, 1918, when Germany signed a peace agreement when they found out that they had to surrender. They also had to pay for all the damage.

In Britain, the war made things took a downturn. The government was desperate for soldiers so it was made a rule that all healthy men should go participate in the war. Many went due to propaganda posters but quite a few did not because of their moral beliefs. They were known as ‘conscientious objectors’. The government gave them the harshest punishments as well by causing them to be viewed by society as ‘selfish’ and ‘lazy’. They were forced to work for the non-combatant corps and if they refused, were tortured or thrown into jail.

World War 2 wasn't a very pleasant time for Germany as it all began on September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. This caused Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany. During the heated war, Japan decided to bomb the U.S. naval base, Peal Harbor, killing thousands of soldiers. This made America furious and caused them to step into the conflict. The infamous Adolf Hitler also rose during World War 2. The war dragged on for six dreadful years, until the allies defeated the Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945.

War isn't a very memorable time in history books but it was necessary. It taught countries the importance of peace and revolutionised military weapons and protocols. It helped them learn from their mistakes and prepare for them so they can be stronger. War is never the solution. As H.G Wells said, “if we dont end war, war will end us”.
